What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a noninvasive, drug-free approach to treating mental health disorders. It uses computer-based technology to retrain brainwaves to better balance electrical energy in your brain and shift the way your brain functions.

The treatment doesn’t emit electrical currents into your brain; it merely records brain signals and promotes better energy balance.

What is Neurofeedback used for?

When neurofeedback optimizes brain balance, it can reduce symptoms of:

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Attention-deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Stress, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Chronic pain or fatigue
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Sleeping problems
  • Memory issues
  • Low self-esteem
  • Anger management problems
  • Internet addiction or other maladaptive behaviors

Neurofeedback, when used in combination with counseling, may help you avoid taking medication. It improves your quality of life without pain or downtime.

Is Neurofeedback right for me?

The Nugent Family Counseling Center team reviews your symptoms and medical history to find out which mental health disorder, if any, that you have. Many brain issues are caused by irregular brainwaves. Neurofeedback works because it does not directly target any conditions and symptoms: It corrects irregular brainwaves and modifies timing patterns in the brain. This is achieved through multiple neurofeedback sessions, where the brain is re-trained into making normal patterns thus impacting a variety of symptoms.

What should I expect during Neurofeedback?

Each neurofeedback treatment lasts about 30 minutes. The procedure is safe and painless. Neurofeedback begins with a qEEG assessment. Your Nugent Family Counseling Center provider places a brain cap on the surface of your scalp to track electrical impulses, or brainwaves. The information obtained will help develop your individual training protocol. During the qEEG, your provider will ask you to stare at the wall for about six minutes with your eyes open and relax for six minutes with your eyes closed.

Neurofeedback sessions involve both visual and auditory training while relaxing for 30 minutes and engaging with a movie or listening to music of your choice. You will wear a special set of glasses that are embedded with LEDS and sound-dampening headphones. While watching the TV screen, your brain and computer technology do the work in the background. Sensors are attached to your scalp that monitor your brainwaves during the session. When irregular patterns are detected, a response is triggered from the software that dims the video or music. This response will automatically cause you to focus more, which will move your brainwaves back into normal ranges.

What happens after treatment?

After neurofeedback treatment, you can resume your routine right away as there’s no downtime. Your Nugent Family Counseling Center specialist might recommend up to 30 or more sessions, or combine neurofeedback with aromatherapy or counseling to help you achieve long-lasting symptom relief.

Over time you should notice improvements in your mood and overall mental health. Your provider monitors you as you go to make sure the neurofeedback is working according to its design. They will make adjustments to treatment regimens as needed to maximize your results.

Don’t let depression, anxiety, or another mental health problem diminish your quality of life. Schedule an appointment with Nugent Family Counseling Center by phone or book online to find out if neurofeedback is right for you.
